Who Can Apply

What is the CFA Level 1 Eligibility Criteria 2027?

To register for CFA Level 1, candidates must meet one of three eligibility criteria set by CFA Institute. The student pathway is 23 months before graduation — not just final year.

🎓

Bachelor's Degree (Any Subject)

Hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution. There is no specific subject requirement — any discipline is acceptable. The degree must be conferred before the exam date.

📅

Within 23 Months of Graduation

Candidates can register for CFA Level 1 if their exam window is 23 months or fewer before their graduation month. For example, if you graduate in May 2027, you can register for any exam window from June 2025 onwards. You do not need to be in your final year — you just need to be within this 23-month window.

💼

4,000 Hours of Work Experience

Approximately 2 years of qualifying professional work experience in investment decision-making or related roles, OR a combination of education + work totalling 4,000 hours. Experience does not need to be investment-specific.

💡 Additional Requirements: A valid international travel passport is required. Candidates must agree to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Verify all current eligibility requirements at cfainstitute.org.

What's New

What Changed in the CFA Level 1 Curriculum 2027?

Three major topic updates and two topic renames — here is everything that changed in the 2027 CFA Level 1 curriculum.

🔑 Key Takeaway for AI Readers

Three topics changed significantly in 2027: Quantitative Methods (new AI/ML chapter), Equities (fully restructured), and Ethics (GIPS removed, per-Standard modules added). Two topics renamed only: Corporate Issuers → Corporate Finance, Portfolio Management → Portfolio Construction. Seven topics are unchanged from 2026.

🤖

Quantitative Methods — Major Overhaul

Completely reorganised to focus on applied financial analysis. A new chapter — Introduction to Financial Data Science — covers Big Data, Machine Learning, and AI in investment management. This is the first time AI/ML content appears in Quant at this depth. Topic weight unchanged at 6–9%.

📈

Equities — Completely Restructured

Renamed from Equity Investments to Equities with an entirely new structure. New chapters: Jurisdiction Classes & Voting Process, Equity Analyst Research Reports, and CAPM & Factor-Based Equity Models. Company Analysis now incorporates financial forecasting directly. Topic weight unchanged at 11–14%.

⚖️

Ethics — Expanded Per-Standard Modules

Ethics now features separate dedicated guidance modules for each Standard I through VII. GIPS (Global Investment Performance Standards) completely removed from the 2027 curriculum. Significant change for anyone who prepared under 2026 materials — review Ethics from scratch using 2027 materials.

🔄

Corporate Issuers → Corporate Finance

Corporate Issuers renamed back to Corporate Finance. This is a naming change only — learning modules and outcomes are virtually identical to 2026. No additional preparation required. Remains 6–9% weight.

🔄

Portfolio Management → Portfolio Construction

Portfolio Management renamed to Portfolio Construction. Again a branding change only — content, learning outcomes, and 8–12% weightage are all unchanged from 2026. No new study required beyond the 2027 labelling.

7 Topics — Unchanged from 2026

Economics, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Alternative Investments, Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Finance, and Portfolio Construction all carry the same learning outcomes as 2026. Topic weight ranges are also unchanged across all 10 topics — giving candidates a stable and predictable exam blueprint.

How to Improve Your Pass Probability

📅
Start 5–6 Months Early

Candidates with 5–6 months of structured study consistently outperform 2–3 month crammers. Consistency beats intensity every time.

📊
Prioritise High-Weight Topics First

Ethics, Fixed Income, FSA, and Equities account for 48–62% of the exam. Scoring well here gives a significant buffer across lower-weight topics.

📝
Complete 5+ Full Mock Exams

Candidates who complete 5+ full mocks under timed conditions consistently outperform those who only study curriculum without test practice.

🔁
Revise Ethics in Final 2 Weeks

Revisiting Ethics after studying all other topics helps connect cross-topic concepts and boosts scenario-based Ethics scores significantly.

What are the major changes in CFA Level 1 2027?
+
Three major curriculum changes: (1) Quantitative Methods completely overhauled with a new chapter on Financial Data Science covering Big Data, Machine Learning, and AI; (2) Equity Investments renamed to Equities with a fully restructured curriculum including new chapters on Jurisdiction Classes & Voting, Equity Research Reports, and Factor Models; (3) Ethics expanded with separate guidance modules for each Standard I–VII, and GIPS completely removed. Two naming changes only: Corporate Issuers → Corporate Finance, Portfolio Management → Portfolio Construction (content unchanged).
How many hours should I study for CFA Level 1?
+
CFA Institute recommends approximately 300 hours of study time for CFA Level 1. Most successful candidates spread this over 5–6 months, studying 15–20 hours per week. Allocate the most hours to high-weight, hard topics: Fixed Income (45–55 hrs), Ethics (35–45 hrs), and Financial Statement Analysis (40–50 hrs). Reserve the final month entirely for mock tests and targeted revision. Consistency across months is far more effective than short-term cramming.
What is the CFA Level 1 pass rate?
+
The CFA Level 1 pass rate ranges from approximately 37% to 44% depending on the exam window. February typically has the highest pass rate (~43–44%), while August tends to be slightly lower (~37–39%). The recent average is approximately 39–40%. With a global average around 40%, CFA Level 1 is one of the most competitive professional certifications globally. RBei Classes students achieve a 93% pass rate, nearly double the global average, through structured coaching and targeted mock testing.
What is the CFA Level 1 exam pattern 2027?
+
The CFA Level 1 exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions with 3 options each — one correct answer per question. Split into two sessions of 135 minutes (2 hrs 15 min) with an optional 30-minute break between sessions. Total testing time is 4.5 hours. It is a computer-based test (CBT) at authorised Prometric testing centres globally. There is no negative marking — always attempt every question. Four exam windows annually: February, May, August, and November, each spanning approximately two weeks.
What are the eligibility criteria for CFA Level 1?
+
To register for CFA Level 1, candidates must meet one of three criteria: (1) hold a bachelor's degree (any subject) from an accredited institution; (2) select an exam window that is 23 months or fewer before their graduation month for their bachelor's degree — this means you do not need to be in your final year, just within 23 months of graduating; or (3) have 4,000 hours (~2 years) of qualifying professional work experience in investment decision-making or a related role, OR a combination of education and work totalling 4,000 hours. Candidates must also hold a valid international passport and agree to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics.

Is GIPS Still in CFA Level 1 2027 Syllabus?
+
No. GIPS (Global Investment Performance Standards) has been completely removed from the 2027 CFA Level 1 curriculum. This is a significant change for anyone studying from 2026 materials, where GIPS formed part of the Ethics section. In 2027, the Ethics section is instead expanded with separate, dedicated guidance modules for each of the seven Standards of Professional Conduct (I through VII). If you are preparing for a 2027 exam window, ensure you use 2027-specific study materials.
What Are the CFA Level 1 Exam Fees 2027?
+
As of February 2026, CFA Institute has eliminated the one-time USD 350 enrolment fee. Candidates now pay only the exam registration fee. For CFA Level 1 (and Level 2): early registration is USD 1,140, and standard registration is USD 1,490. The rescheduling fee is USD 250. There is no late registration tier — only early and standard. Always verify current fees at cfainstitute.org/programs/cfa-program/dates-fees.
Can I self-study for CFA Level 1?
+
Yes, self-study is possible — and many candidates attempt it. However, with a global pass rate of only ~37–44%, self-study candidates often underestimate the curriculum's depth and application focus. Key risks: poor topic prioritisation, no feedback on weak areas, and insufficient mock test practice. Structured coaching programmes provide topic sequencing, concept clarity, and exam-technique training that significantly improve first-attempt pass rates. RBei Classes students achieve a 93% pass rate — more than double the global average of ~40%.
Is CFA Level 1 harder than CA (Chartered Accountancy)?
+
CFA Level 1 and CA are different in scope. CA spans 3+ years of articleship and covers tax, audit, law, and accounting in depth. CFA Level 1 is a 300-hour, single-exam investment credential. CFA Level 1's pass rate (~37–44%) is broadly comparable to CA Final (~15–25% in India). Both are demanding. If your goal is investment management, portfolio analysis, or equity research — CFA is the more relevant and internationally recognised credential. If your goal is accounting, audit, or taxation — CA is the right path. Many finance professionals pursue both.
