Pass the multiple-choice SCR Exam. After you become an SCR Certificate Holder, GARP strongly encourages participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to stay current with best practices in risk management.
The SCR Exam is a 90-question multiple-choice exam with two case studies designed to test mastery of climate risk management. You have four hours to complete it. Results are graded on a pass/fail basis. Delivery is in-person CBT at Pearson VUE centres.

Retakes

If you don’t pass, don’t schedule, or don’t sit after registering, you can usually register once at USD 350 for either of the next two windows. Miss those windows and full fees apply again. Updated eBook is free if the curriculum changes before your retake.

Scheduling

After GARP registration, schedule an in-person CBT seat at Pearson VUE for your registered window. Schedule at least 48 hours before your preferred start time. Fail to schedule by the deadline and you must re-register and pay again.

Payment

Payment must reach GARP by 11:59 pm EST on the registration closing date. Accepted: Credit Card (Visa/MC/Amex/Discover), Alipay (ePay), Wire (+USD 50), ACH (+USD 50). Reference your GARP ID and invoice on wire/ACH.

Registration vs scheduling

Registration = enrol + pay for a window. Scheduling = pick Pearson VUE site, date, and time. Without scheduling you won’t know where to appear.

What to Expect — Pre-Exam & Exam Day

Pre-Exam Policies

Complete the online registration form and pay the fee. If you register and then decide not to schedule/sit, you forfeit the fee unless you request a refund within 48 hours. Candidates must agree to the Candidate Responsibility Statement and GARP Code of Conduct.
You have 48 hours after submitting exam registration payment to request a refund. Requests must be emailed to GARP (exam-related support inbox on garp.org). Deadlines are 11:59 pm Eastern Time.
SCR candidates may defer once to the next exam window. Deferral + fee must be submitted by April 1 (April window) or October 1 (October window). Administrative fee historically USD 150. Deferring into the next exam year includes the new SCR eBook when available.
Schedule CBT at Pearson VUE ≥48 hours ahead; seats are first-come, first-served. Reschedule/change site on Pearson VUE until 48 hours before start. Missing schedule or appointment forfeits the exam fee. Eligible retake: USD 350 once across the next two administrations; digital curriculum updates provided if content changes.
Late arrival after the Confirmation of Appointment start time = no entry, no refund/deferral, fee forfeited. ID must be original, valid, non-expired, government-issued, with photo and signature (e.g. passport, national ID, driver’s licence). Name must exactly match GARP registration. Digital IDs are not accepted. No exceptions — wrong/missing ID means you cannot sit and you forfeit the fee.

Exam Day Policies

No personal items in the exam room (phones, watches, bags, coats, food/drink, notes, large hair accessories/jewelry, etc.). Store items in a locker or vehicle; devices off. Refusal = cannot sit, fee lost. No candidate communication once inside. Disruptive or fraudulent behaviour can end the session and affect future eligibility.
For in-person CBT, GARP provides an on-screen digital calculator. An erasable note board and pen are provided — no personal scratch paper or unauthorised materials.
Leave only with proctor approval. Raise your hand for restroom breaks — no extra time. Finish early → raise hand, exit promptly, no return.
Any activity that compromises exam integrity before, during, or after the session is a violation. Candidates may be dismissed; proctors file a report for GARP review.

About the SCR Exam

The SCR Exam is a standard-oriented assessment of climate risk guidelines, methodologies, and frameworks. It has 90 equally weighted MCQs, including two case studies, and four hours to complete.
You can apply sustainability and climate risk principles in current and future roles. Passing shows you have the knowledge and tools to assess and manage climate risk challenges many industries face.
Not highly quantitative. A few questions may need limited multiplication/division, ratios, or metric magnitudes; some use graphs or tables. Designed for a wide audience.
None. No work experience in sustainability or climate risk is required to sit for the Exam.
Currently, the SCR Exam is offered in American English only.
